** INTRODUCTION **
The ChessMAGIC! System Editor (aka CMSED) is the fastest, safest and
most powerful full-featured database management utility you'll find
for maintaining your ChessMAGIC! system.
While fully functional, the unregistered version does have the
following minor restrictions:
1. Maximum of 30 records may be edited and/or added.
2. Adding new game areas is disabled.
The registered CMSED is offered in two versions:
1. Single User
This version must be run while nobody is accessing the
ChessMAGIC! system.
2. LAN\Multiuser
This version allows you to safely maintain the ChessMAGIC!
system while it is being accessed by your users.
The CMSED documentation is provided as context-sensitive help
within the program itself. This means you will get specific area
help just by tapping the <F1> key from anywhere within the program.
Having documentation available at the touch of a key is much handier
than hunting through pages for that item you remembered seeing
somewhere...
As with normal database management programs, full cursor controls
are available throughout CMSED. For those of you used to WordStar
controls, they are accepted during most field inputs. The <ESC> key
will back you out of everything, including the main menu. The
initial mode is overwrite.

═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
The ChessMAGIC! System Editor works as intended by the author. You
are always apt to make a mistake and delete important information.
By following a regular and rotational backup policy, any such
mistakes should be easy to correct. In no event shall the CMSED
author or its agents be held responsible for damages, real or
inferred, that may occur from its use.

INSTALLATION - General Page 2
═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
Because of its size, CMSED.EXE has been split into three modules and
is distributed in three archives.
Extract all of the archive file members from each of the CMSED
distribution diskettes into a work area. Next, run INSTALL.bat to
compile the CMSED.EXE file from the split modules (CMSED330.00?).
Once the compilation is complete, you may delete these three modules.
Now, follow the remaining installation instructions.
These files _must_ be placed within your ChessMAGIC! system
directory:
CMS_HELP.DBF
CMS_HELP.FPT
This file can also be placed within the same directory, but may
optionally be placed elsewhere:
CMSED.EXE
If you do choose to place the CMSED.exe program file elsewhere, you
_must_ include that drive/directory in your PATH statement.
The opening screen is for entry of your registration information.
Unregistered CMSED will display an exiting shareware screen.

SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS Page 3
═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
Hardware
Systems with 8086/8088 through 80486 (or higher) CPU's.
While obvious that the best performance from CMSED will be
obtained with 386/486 systems, it will operate just fine on
systems utilizing less powerful CPU's.
Optional - math coprocessor and/or printer
Conventional Memory (All Versions as of 3.3)
Your system must have a minimum of 512k with at least 480k of that
free for CMSED.
Conventional Memory (LAN\Multiuser Version)
Each work station must have a minimum of 480k of free memory,
_after_ the network shell has been loaded. If you have LIM 4.0
compatible EMS, this requirement drops to 440k.
EMS/EEMS/XMS Memory
There is NO MINIMUM requirement! However, the more you have
available, the better CMSED performs.
Operating Systems & NETBIOS Compatibility
PC\MS-DOS v3.1 or higher (4DOS compatible)
100% Desqview compatible
The registered LAN\Multiuser version of CMSED is fully compatible
with network software that supports the standard NETBIOS
interface. This will include most of the currently available
networks, including:
3Com 3+
Banyan Vines
IBM PC Network
Invisible Net
Lantastic
Novell Advanced NetWare (revision 1.02 or higher)
Novel NetWare 286
Novel NetWare 386
...and many more
The LAN\Multiuser version requires SHARE to be loaded when
simultaneous access is required under multi-taskers in non-
network situations. If used in a network, check your
documentation, since some (i.e. Novell) do not require this module
to be loaded.

CUSTOMIZATION Page 4
═════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
CONFIG.SYS
Suggested Minimum: BUFFERS=20
FILES=40
Use of a caching program may preclude use of the normal BUFFERS
statement, so check its documentation. If you already have
FILES defined, add 40 to the number configured.
General CMSED Configuration {optional}
The CONFIG.FP file can be modified to match your system
requirements. By default, the file contains:
EMS=1000
This means CMSED will take 1 meg of EMS for its own use. If this
line were removed, CMSED would take all available EMS. On a
decent sized 386/486 system, you might wish to change the line to:
EMS=2000
This would provide CMSED with 2 megabytes of EMS for optimum
speed.
Older EMS Emulators {optional}
Some older EMS memory managers do not provide full LIM 4.0
specification support. If you have one of these older memory
managers and CMSED operates strangely, use one of the following
lines:
EMS64=OFF
This will use the expanded memory to speed file I/O, only. If you
still have trouble, use:
EMS=64
This would ignore all expanded memory except for the first 64k,
which would be used for "general purpose" memory. Use this only
as a last resort.
Desqview Suggestions
PIF (Program Information Files) are enclosed for easy setup.
These are in the self-extracting CMSEDPIF.EXE archive.
